The "Great Debate" was held at the Sprig and Fern Wallace St on Tuesday 23rd August 2011 in front of a packed crowd of Motueka residents. The pre-election debate was organised by Our Town Motueka and concentrated largely on issues affecting local people.
The speakers were National's Chris Auchinvole, Labour's Damien O'Connor and the Green's Kevin Hague.
The discussions has serious moments of thought provoking debate and also lighter moments helped by the debate "referee" John Tamihere.

The Sprig and Fern in Wallace St, Motueka was the perfect venue for this important debate. Standing room only.

John Tamihere injected humour at regular intervals ensuring the debate never became too dry.

Local media covered the debate with keen interest.

The performance of each speaker was rated using a very simple straw poll using the loadest cheer system. The winner received a rigger of Sprig and Fern beer.

After the debate wound up, Sue and Peter Fry were thanked for their help in staging this unique event.
