Tracy Banner is the Sprig and Fern Brewery’s Head Brewer and owns the brewery with her husband Ken. Tracy has spent her working life learning, developing and perfecting her beer brewing craft in breweries in the UK and New Zealand.
Whilst always carefully applying good basic brewing techniques, Tracy is not afraid to push the envelope to explore different facets of brewing to bring interesting and innovative tastes to discerning beer drinkers.

The Sprig & Fern Brewery Team
Tracy Banner heads the small and enthusiastic Sprig & Fern Brewery team that collectively has more than 50 years of commercial brewing experience. They are based at the Beach Road, Richmond, premises about 10 minutes from Nelson city. Every batch is hand brewed with a level of care and an attention to quality that has earned us a solid reputation amongst real craft beer drinkers throughout New Zealand.
Our brewing philosophy
In brewing, as in many things in life, what you put in effects what comes out. Our brewing philosophy is simple - we use quality ingredients and work very hard to ensure quality and consistency. We source our hops and cider apples locally, and our malts from suppliers in both the South and North Islands. Our specialty malts that provide the colour and flavour for some of our different beer styles are sourced from South Canterbury, Germany and the United Kingdom. We use the local town supply water, which is extremely good quality for our beer and cider production.
Our beers and ciders are produced using all natural ingredients and are unpasteurised to retain their full flavour. We call it 'Real Live Beer' and encourage you to keep it well refrigerated to maintain quality and freshness.
